The people of Erwin First United Methodist Church are diverse, welcoming, committed to community and mission, with a worship style that could best be described as inclusive. Sunday services usually feature a blend of traditional (organ, choir, communion) and contemporary (electric guitars, drums, dance) elements, although all forms of Christian worship expression are welcomed. About half the members of Erwin First lives within walking distance of the church, and we are among the most ethnically diverse congregations in the city of Syracuse. First-time visitors are warmly greeted and welcomed.
Erwin First primarily serves the area around Syracuse University/Westcott Street, but is also actively involved in broader missions within the city of Syracuse and the world. Our Christian education classes are offered throughout the year to both members and nonmembers. Our large, lovingly-maintained building at the corner of Westcott and Euclid allows us to host several community groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous, the Syracuse School of Dance, Peterson Sewing School, Boy Scouts Troop 1, Girl Scouts, the Westcott Community Center, the University Neighborhood Preservation Association (UNPA), the Syracuse Community Choir, the South East University Neighborhood Association (SEUNA) and many music recitals. Erwin Nursery School and Universal Pre-K serves the children of the Westcott Street neighborhood. We are also home to Hope Korean United Methodist Church, which offers Korean-language services Sundays at 12:30 p.m., and St. Andrew the Apostle Syracuse Action Committee, which meets on the fourth Sunday of each month at 4:00 p.m.
Oh, and we like to eat. A lot.
We at Erwin First feel God is calling us to continue what we’re doing, and do even more. We need more hands, more members from the immediate neighborhood, and better engagement with the community. We need you!
